Distance Drivers

The distance drivers in the archive, with flight numbers, stability and plastics — and a straight answer on whether you should be throwing one.

Is a distance driver right for you?

Distance drivers are the fastest, sharpest-rimmed discs made. Thrown at the speed they were designed for, nothing goes farther. Thrown slower, they stall and fade out early — which is why a speed-13 driver in the wrong hands lands shorter than a midrange. It is the most commonly mis-bought disc in the sport.
What it does

Cuts through air

A wide, sharp rim and a speed rating of 9 and up. Built to hold its line at high velocity and carry a long way before the fade takes over. The extra rim width is what buys the distance — and what makes it harder to grip and release cleanly.
What it asks of you

Arm speed, not effort

Speed ratings are only met at high velocity. Below roughly 325 feet of controlled distance, a fast driver never reaches the speed it needs, turns over less than the numbers suggest and finishes hard left for a right-handed backhand. Throwing harder makes this worse, not better.
The common mistake

Buying the biggest number

Speed is a design spec, not a distance promise. A speed-9 driver you can actually turn over will out-drive a speed-14 you can't — usually by a lot. Start lower than you think and move up only when the disc is finishing too straight.
Not sure yet
If you're not consistently past 325 feet, start with a fairway driver. Most players gain more distance from a disc they can control than from a faster one they can't — and the fairway will teach you the line the driver needs.
