About the Super Stingray

Super Stingray: Innova’s stable mid-range driver

The Super Stingray is a straight-to-stable midrange from Innova, rated 4 / 5 / -1 / 1 — the firmer, straighter sibling of the Stingray, made for players with a bit more arm.

Innova’s own line on it is that it “flies straighter and is made for players with slightly more power” than the Stingray, and the numbers say the same: minus one turn instead of the Stingray’s minus three, so a moderate arm gets a straight flight with a soft finish rather than a turnover. Five glide keeps it in the air, and the blunt nose makes it a comfortable disc to throw flat through a gap. Infinite’s 13 reviewers average it at exactly 4 / 5 / -1 / 1. Harder arms will still turn it on a flat release; the disc for them is a Roc.

It is the straight midrange between the Stingray and the Roc, and it is the one to reach for on a tight, straight approach where a Roc would fade out. The limit is wind: one fade does not fight a headwind.

The Super Stingray does not appear in the PDGA approved-disc list under its own name, so it is presumably certified under the Stingray’s 1987 record; there is no separate approval date or geometry to give here. Innova does not explain the name beyond the obvious.

It shipped in Champion and Star. It is out of production, and both retailers and TryDiscs list it as discontinued; Champion Super Stingrays are the ones that still circulate.

Flies like…

How much the Super Stingray turns and fades depends on how hard it is thrown. These three shapes are drawn from the manufacturer’s numbers, not from measured throws.
