About the Captain's Caliber

Captain's Caliber: Discraft’s stable putt & approach

The Discraft Captain’s Caliber is a stable-to-overstable throwing putter, rated 4/4/0/2, designed with Seppo Paju to sit between the Luna and the Zone in Discraft’s putt-and-approach line.

Zero turn and two fade at putter speed means it holds the line you release it on and finishes with a modest, predictable hook to the left for a right-hand backhand — less of a dump-out than the Zone, with enough glide to keep working forward through the finish. Discraft pitches it at torque-resistant forehand approaches and full-power backhand shots on guarded greens. For a 250-foot arm it’s a straight-to-fade approach disc that won’t turn over; a 400-foot arm can use it as a headwind putter and a driving putter that stays honest under power. Note that Discraft’s own launch post quotes 4/3/0/3, while every retailer’s spec sheet and Infinite’s manufacturer rating print 4/4/0/2; this page uses the retailer figure, and with one Infinite review so far there’s no crowd average to settle it.

Discraft frames the slot directly: more resistance to turn and a stronger finish than the Luna when you throw harder or manage wind, and a more stable, glidier flight than the Zone SS with a different feel in the hand. The cross-brand comparison Discraft itself makes is the Axiom Envy — both stable throwing putters built to handle power and land on a line. What it isn’t is a flippable touch putter: a disc that takes an anhyzer and holds it is the Luna’s job, not this one’s.

“Captain’s” is Discraft’s prefix for its team captains’ signature molds — Paul Ulibarri’s Captain’s Raptor is the other one here — and Paju became European Team Captain when he joined Team Discraft Europe in April 2026. The Caliber is the first mold he has designed himself. The Finnish former Junior World Champion and European Champion says he carried the word “Caliber” in his phone notes for more than 13 years waiting for the right disc; to him it stands for skill, character and quality.

PDGA approved on 27 April 2026 (cert 26-61). A Swirl ESP “Test Flight” run went out through European retailers first; the First Run Z Jawbreaker had its global release on 28 August 2026. On the rim, Discraft describes the disc both as beadless and as carrying a “subtle microbead,” and retailers split the same way, so expect a very low, smooth bead at most. The PDGA record puts the rim at 1.1 cm wide and 1.4 cm deep on a 21.1 cm disc, max weight 175.1 g.

How much the Captain's Caliber turns and fades depends on how hard it is thrown. These three shapes are drawn from the manufacturer’s numbers, not from measured throws.

Section drawing of a disc golf disc with the rim depth dimensioned
